German Chocolate Cake
German Chocolate Cake is a classic sweet chocolate layer cake with buttermilk, beaten egg whites, vanilla, and coconut-pecan frosting. This version spreads the frosting between layers and over the top and sides.
Melt the German sweet chocolate in boiling water and let it cool.
Sift the flour, baking soda, and salt together.
Cream the butter and sugar, beat in egg yolks, then blend in vanilla and the melted chocolate.
Add the flour mixture alternately with buttermilk, then fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites.
Bake in three lined 9-inch pans at 350 F for 30 to 35 minutes, cool, and frost with coconut-pecan frosting.
