German Slaw
German Slaw is a make-ahead cabbage salad dressed with a hot vinegar, oil, mustard, and celery seed dressing. Pouring the boiled dressing over the cabbage softens it just enough while preserving crunch and a sweet-tangy bite.
Combine the chopped cabbage and sliced onion in a large bowl, then sprinkle with 1 cup sugar.
In a small saucepan combine the remaining sugar, salt, dry mustard, celery seed, vinegar, and oil.
Bring the dressing to a full boil, stirring to dissolve the seasonings.
Immediately pour the hot dressing over the cabbage mixture.
Toss well, cover, and refrigerate overnight.
Stir again before serving chilled.
