French Onion Soup
French Onion Soup is an moderately easy French soup you can prepare in about 1 hour 40 minutes. Made with medium onions, sliced, . margarine, c. water, . pepper and . dried thyme leaves, this recipe delivers authentic, satisfying flavors. Simple to make and full of bold, satisfying flavors.
Cover onions and cook in butter in a 3-quart saucepan over low heat, until tender, about 20 to 30 minutes.
Add water, pepper, thyme, bay leaf and broth.
Heat to boiling; reduce heat.
Cover and simmer 15 minutes.
Remove bay leaf.
Set oven control to broil.
Place 1 slice toasted bread in each of 4 ovenproof bowls. Pour in onions and broth; top with Swiss cheese.
Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
Place bowls on cookie sheet.
Broil with tops of bowls about 5 inches from heat, just until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
