Frankfurters and Sauerkraut
Frankfurters and Sauerkraut is a simple German-style one-pot dinner with kraut, tomatoes, brown sugar, dry mustard, and sliced frankfurters. A long simmer lets the sauerkraut soften and absorb the sweet-tangy tomato sauce before the sausage heats through.
Combine the sauerkraut, tomatoes, brown sugar, and dry mustard in a heavy saucepan or Dutch oven.
Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves into the juices.
Cook uncovered or partly covered for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the kraut is tender and flavorful.
Add the sliced frankfurters and nestle them into the sauerkraut.
Cook about 30 minutes longer, until the frankfurters are hot and the sauce is slightly reduced.
