Maraschino Cherry Cookies

Place shortening, vanilla, sugar, brown sugar and egg in mixing bowl.
Beat thoroughly.
Add nuts and cherries; mix.
Sift together flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt.
Divide into 2 portions.
Add 1/2 to first mixture; mix well.
Add remaining half; beat thoroughly.
Knead dough with hands until smooth.
Pack very firmly and shape into 2 bars (2 x 2-inch square).
Wrap in waxed paper.
Chill in refrigerator until firm. Cut in 1/8-inch slices; place on ungreased baking sheet.
Bake in hot oven at 400Β° for 6 to 8 minutes.
Makes 60 cookies.
