Fill 1 gallon glass or plastic jug with sliced cucumbers. Dissolve salt in enough water to cover cucumbers.

Let set for 3 days.

Pour off water, rinse 3 times in cold water.

Soak 24 hours with alum in water to cover.

Pour off and rinse 3 times in cold water.

Cover with white vinegar, let set for 7 days.

Drain vinegar off and throw away.

Rinse 1 time.

Heat 1 cup vinegar and 3 cups sugar until sugar is dissolved.

Cool and pour over cucumbers (will not cover pickles), add pickling spice and turmeric (put spice and turmeric in soft cloth tied up).

Let set for 24 hours.
