Franks and Sauerkraut
Franks and Sauerkraut is a baked German-style casserole with sauerkraut, caraway, onion, brown sugar, apples, and frankfurters. The apples roast on top of the kraut while the franks brown around the edges, creating a simple sweet-savory supper.
Heat the oven to 350 F.
Combine the sauerkraut, caraway seed, 1 teaspoon brown sugar, onion slices, and margarine in a shallow square baking dish.
Halve the unpeeled apples, remove the cores, brush the cut sides with melted margarine, and sprinkle with brown sugar.
Arrange the apple halves in a diagonal line across the sauerkraut and place frankfurters on both sides.
Bake 30 to 35 minutes, until the apples are tender and the frankfurters are hot; serve immediately.
